Global Patent Prosecution Highway (GPPH)

The Global Patent Prosecution Highway (GPPH) program allows patent applicants to fast track the examination at one office if a corresponding application receives positive examination results at one of the GPPH partner Intellectual Property (IP) offices through the sharing of examination results. 
There are currently 24 countries that are participating in the GPPH pilot program.  Their respective patent offices are as follows:

  1. Austrian Patent Office (APO)
  2. Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)
  3. Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO)
  4. ​Estonian Patent Office
  5. Finnish Patent and Registration Office
  6. German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA)
  7. Hungarian Intellectual Property Office (HIPO)
  8. Icelandic Patent Office (IPO)
  9. Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand
  10. ​Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS)
  11. Intellectual Property Office, United Kingdom (IPO)
  12. IP Australia
  13. Israel Patent Office (ILPO)
  14. Japan Patent Office (JPO)
  15. Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO)
  16. Nordic Patent Institute (NPI)
  17. Norwegian Industrial Property Office (NIPO)
  18. Patent Office of the Republic of Poland (PPO)
  19. Portuguese Institute of Industrial Property (INPI)
  20. Russian Federal Service for Intellectual Property (ROSPATENT)
  21. Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO)
  22. Superintendency of Industry and Commerce (SIC) of the Republic of Colombia
  23. Swedish Patent and Registration Office (PRV)
  24. United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
  25. Visegrad Patent Institute

Additionally, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has active Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) agreements, separate from the GPPH program, with:

  1. China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)
  2. ​​European Patent Office (EPO)
  3. Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI)
  4. National Institute of Industrial Property of Chile (INAPI) - PPH & PCT-PPH
  5. ​Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO)

To-date, grant rates are significantly higher for PPH applications and a significant percentage of the PPH applications proceed to allowance in Canada without the issuance of an office action.  You are most welcome to contact us to explore whether securing your patent rights in Canada through the PPH route might be appropriate for you.
